SUCCESS- COMPETITION

If you define success as finding satisfaction in relationship, possibly… very possibly, competition is detrimental to success.

That's what I believe

It's a sense of making what's considered impossible possible.
                                   What's considered possible?
I'll make what I have been doing possible.
What have I been doing?
It's to show people learning English is a whole life- taking process and make English as easy as It should be.

THE ENDS OF THE LOVE AFFAIRS- 1

The ends of the love affairs deserve being told which will contribute the social common stories, the human kinds’ literature.

After being broken, people often blame, question, resent, or even revenge.

There are some thanking their ex-lovers for giving them lessons, understanding many things.

They become stronger, more brilliant and at most they live more happlily or vice versa.

There are such movies, magazines, newspapers, poems research, crimes, trials or even jokes, legents about these ends.

T.V đã tạo ra một đoạn cuối như nhiều phụ nữ đã làm, âm thầm lập gia đình.

T.V made an end like many females did, getting married silently.

After 5 years, trying to find Phuc Lun, one of my Bao Loc classmates, ,to ask for my address, she wrote me.

In those letters, there is a line worth telling,

“I hope you have some chances to come back Can Tho. Remember to pass by to pay my son and me a visit.”

“Em và con!” tôi thản thốt kêu lên.

“My son and me!” I suddenly cried out.

With a few words added, I would easily lose my life.

Another letter made me so worried that I could not sleep or eat because she wrote down this way,

“My husband joins the army, basing in Phu Quoc now. I want you to go with me to visit him there.”

Fortunately, the trip to visit her husband did not occur.

Thật ra không ai đọc được cụm từ: “thăm em và con” cho nên tôi bình an vô sự.

Actually, noone read the phrase: “My son and me” so I was still safe.

But I, after 3 years, with my wife on our 2- week-honey moon trip back from Dalat in the last day.

Funily enough, under the oil-lamp light, she leaned her head to mine watching our wedding photos, asking about my family the someone closed to me did.

After a while, my wife was so embarrassed that she stepped toward the front yard to get rid of herself from the scence.

SHOUT OUT- WHAT PROFESSION- CNN

MARIEN TALKS ON HER HERITAGE

SINH NHẬT LẦN ĐẦU TIÊN

My first birthday party

Having her 10th daughter go to my school to ask me to go home urgently in late afternoon on Aug19,1975, my God mother made me cry because this was the first time in my life I had a birthday party held with only 2 guests, a birthday cake which she had secretly baked by herself to avoid her 10 blood envious chidren.

Bảo Như Ngọc lấy ra một cây nến tượng trưng, bảo tôi thắp lên xong, bà tự tay tắt đèn của phòng khách.

Telling Nhu Ngoc to get out a candle as a symbol, telling me to lit it up, she herself turned off the lights in the living room.

In the flickering candle light, she reminded me of making a wish and I nearly cried embarrassingly,

“I wish I would always have a happy family.”

Just only Thursday, I would have to go back to my school the following morning. She delicately told me to bring the remaining cake to share with my roommates.

Looking back to myself, thinking of my Mom, I grasped my fingers firmly telling myself,

“Only education would help me make a difference in my life. I have just got an encouragement and I just need more efforts.”

Having sit still, Nhu Ngoc felt strange to herself who had had surfeit of both care and love from both parents but not always made them pleased.

Anyone needs parents as they always need water. Only those whose parents passed away and who nearly die of water understand more the value of those two common stuffs.

At about midnight, my God mother asked me to go to bed for my going to school tomorrow. She made me moved once more because my blood mother had never encouraged me or reminded me of anything. There are too many students having too many birthday parties, many pieces of their parents’ advice. They often ignore them but I don’t.

Football and my life

BÓNG ĐÁ và CUỘC ĐỜI TÔI

Football and my life

A lot has been told and written so I want to quote briefly that football has changed my life so deeply.

Từ một chàng sinh viên bất đắc chí vì lý lịch xấu, gia đình tan nác, tôi chọn chơi bóng đá làm phương tiện để chứng tỏ chính mình.

As a hopeless student with a bad background, a broken family, I chose to play football to prove myself.

As a striker, I led my class- 74 KNNc to the final match.

We defeated our opponent- 74KCNa to become champions of the university and I obviously became a talented trustful midfielder.

Considerring a goal keeper in class 74 CTM not qualified enough, I volunteered to wear gloves to keep the goal from the first game, Dec 1975 until the day I came to Kien Giang Mar 1980.

To keep my position, I just had to practice hard. In Bao Loc, to get up early, I had to go to bed at 9. There, in order to get a good sleep, I practiced every afternoon.

Because I used tobe a book-worm and play the guitar 365 days a year in Bao Loc, here I could do the same thing. Rain or sunshine could not stop me playing the guitar, neither did it rain cats and dogs or was it so hot.

When the former chief team- Nguyen Hung- Agricultural College- graduated Jul 1976, I was voted be the next.

As I first showed up in the tournament “The Spring” run by the Department of Education of HCMC, I was among the 3 goal keepers selected.

During the 4 years of college, I neither missed any games nor played badly any games.

In January of 1977, Phan Van Lan- a graduate from the second course of Tu Son Gym and Sports University- was in charged at my University. He set up the university policy which included maintaining that each of sport’s department head was solely responsible and independent.

I was the first one he chose to be head of football. The more whole school sports was progressive, the better I was trusful and responsible.

I knew my special strenght best of all and I recoginezd very clearly what I would do.

That helped me a lot as a farmer knew his daily work or a soldier understood his each fight.

Even though I was not a Communist youth- member, I was in charge as the head of football of the school and, of course, Agriculture ward.

Although I had not been trained, I took a whisle and worked as a good referee for all school games.

Basketball followed foolball’s success. With my playing experience in Bao Loc, I had a chance to play in male basket ball college team.

Due to a lot of girl students in the dorm wanted to try basket ball, I became their coach- an idol in some of their eyes.

Vì các đội bóng chung quanh trường đều thiếu họăc không có sân tập, đội chúng tôi trở thành cục nam châm lớn.

As other teams around the school didn’t have or lacked a football yard to practice, We turned to be a big magnet.

We got a lot of invitations. Viso Detergent Company often asked my 2 teammates and me to officially play for them.

Then Viet Duc technical High School and Thu Duc district team also needed my sticky hands.

In my internship in Soc Trang, the chief of the provincial team persuaded me to play in one of their games.

Back in Bao Loc, Tam De and Bay Binh’s talent helped make me the second goal striker, I was rather coward though. After the national revolution, I was a guy with self-pity. But with what I did for the school sports campaign, I was self- assured.

It was often said, “Being expert or being political”. I often asked myself, “Being good enough?”.

On behalf of the whole team, I was in charge of keep the bikes and motobikes for some big games. I got a job of making lines and hanging the goal’s nets to raise the team’s fund.

For each of the city’s big games, I was given 2 tickets to Thong Nhat stadium.

When my class went practicing at four different locations, beside my guitar, I carried a big bag of football shoes for my class team. In another word, when getting invitations to play where we practiced, we advertised our university’s brand name.

Due to what I did, Can Tho university officially asked me to work for it Sep 1979.

Contrary to many predictions, I was offered a job as a sports official at my own university. I was unexpectedly honored. The school bus, a dorm room, teacher’s dinning room, high standard, such as 19 kg of rice, meat, milk, sportswear were what all graduates wished.

My God mother- also my mother-in-law tobe- had nothing more to expect from me. After one year of separation, I came back to her family and reconciled myself to a sister’s envy as well as others’.

After solving my private matters, I decided to see my blood Mon at Soc Xoai, Hon Dat, Kien Giang. In my luggage, there was a warm love for my Mom and a buring love for football as well.

Wearing school shoes and T-shirt while I practiced at Soc Xoai’s yard, everyone enjoyed watching me as I did when Phuong Thanh, an artist- footballer, practiced and played one game for my Bao Loc Agriculture high school in 1973.

Ông Tư Dả- ông bầu đội bóng xã, đã ký hợp đồng cho tôi thi đấu cho đội Công Ty Vật Tư tỉnh mấy trận liền. Vì thiếu cấu thủ, đội bóng giàu mạnh nỗi tiếng này- vô địch mấy năm liền- đã nhận tôi về Kiên Giang công tác và “đá bóng”.

Mr. Tu Da- the team manager at my commune- signed a contract to have me play for The provincial Technical Material Company several games. Due to lacking players, the rich and famous team- a consecutive champions- got me here to work and play football for it.

Just a few knew that just my God Mom adviced me to be here so I would be able to have a chance to support my Blood Mom.

Cuối tháng 3 năm 1980 tôi về đây trong lúc em trai tôi còn trong trại giam, chị tôi ở kinh tế mới.

At the end of March 1980, I got here to work while my brother was still in prison, my sister was in a new-economic zone.

Practicing every afternoon, playing every fortnight, I played obviously better. In the national tournament that year 1982, I was a selected goalie.

The team was assited by one of the Sai Gon Port’s midfielers. As a second goal keeper, I played 2 games rather well.

After weekly game, I saw my Mom who was proud of me because the neigbors had rumors or talked about me,

“It’s rare to be the same as you.”

After my fiance’s visit and my brother and my sister’s going abroad, Apr 1982, the company was sure that I had missed the trip so they would no longer trust me.

Being disappointed, losing hope made me drink. No longer after joining drinking club, I was highly ranked.

Asking for a permission to stay out, I tutored and shared a small making chalk business. I practiced to make advertising boards myself to prepare for another change.

Having a lover and getting married to her helped me look forward. I stayed with the family-in-law and went to work until I was fired.

Failing to apply for jobs several times, I decided to be part of my father-in- law’s making wine home business. Did the ball stop rolling in my heart? Was life just as smooth as it seemed? Did I feel pleased to be a wine producer?

I did not believe in fate but I did count on what Dat- a former famous striker- working as a coach for Forestry Department- asked me,

“Try to play a game for us, brother Thanh.”

Đó là trận bán kết giải bóng đá tỉnh K.G năm 1985. Tôi chụp khá ổn định và chúng tôi thắng trận. Tôi lại được mời chụp trận kế tiếp- cái trận chung kết quyết định ấy.

That was a semi-final game in the provincial championship 1985. I played rather well and we won that game. I was asked to go on for the final one- the deciding one.

Making a good save in the game, I was almost a hero. In the 5-penalty shoot out, our opponent- Ha Tien cement- 2 would never forget my save at their final shot which helped make the Forestry Department the champions.

The vice- department director asked me to work. What a life! I became a construction controler for the Forestry Company as well as the department’s both goal keeper and an accord guitarist until the day I stopped working for them.

As my going to school in Bao Loc, playing football and my coming to Rach Gia changed my life very much, now did my studying and teaching English.

How spectacular a football game can be! How about life?

Basic English

Basic English

A simplified form of the English language based on 850 key words was developed in the late 1920s by the English psychologist Charles Kay Ogden and publicized by the English educator I. A. Richards.

Known as Basic English, it was used mainly to teach English to non-English-speaking persons and promoted as an international language. The complexities of English spelling and grammar, however, were major hindrances-barriers- to the adoption of Basic English as a second language.

The fundamental principle of Basic English was that any idea, however complex, may be reduced to simple units of thought and expressed clearly by a limited number of everyday words.

The 850-word primary vocabulary was composed of 600 nouns (representing things or events), 150 adjectives (for qualities and properties), and 100 general “operational” words, mainly verbs and prepositions.

Almost all the words were in common use in English-speaking countries; more than 60 percent were one-syllable words.

The abbreviated vocabulary was created in part by eliminating numerous synonyms and by extending the use of 18 “basic” verbs, such as make, get, do, have, and be.

These verbs were generally combined with prepositions, such as up, among, under, in, and forward.

For example, a Basic English student would use the expression “go up” instead of “ascend.”

Modern English is a relatively uninflected language. Nouns have separate endings only in the possessive case and the plural number. Verbs have both a strong conjugation—shown in older words—with internal vowel change, for example, sing, sang, sung,

and a weak conjugation with dental suffixes indicating past tense, as in play, played. The latter is the predominant type.

Only 66 verbs of the strong type are in use; newer verbs invariably follow the weak pattern. The third person singular has an -s ending, as in does.

The structure of English verbs is thus fairly simple, compared with that of verbs in similar languages, and includes only a few other endings, such as -ing or -en; but verb structure does involve the use of numerous auxiliaries such as have, can, may, or must.

Monosyllabic and some disyllabic adjectives are inflected for degree of comparison, such as larger or happiest; other adjectives express the same distinction by compounding with more and most.

Pronouns, the most heavily inflected parts of speech in English, have objective case forms, such as me or her, in addition to the nominative (I, he, we) and possessive forms (my, his, hers, our).

JAPANESE BLACKS

Japanese agricultural products are the results of dedication and sophiticated production technologies.

They’re rich in both flavor and nutrience and

provide perfect accompany to fish meat and all sort about the ingredients.

Japan produces some of the world best beef, the results of over a century of effort to improve breeds.

Japanese Blacks in particular are noted for high degree-fat-muffeling.

This is why its beef is soft, flavourful, creammy and tender.

Many years of improvement produce the exceptional characteristic of the beef from Japanese Blacks.

The qualities are enhanced by the breeding process which is closely monitored by experienced farmers.

To create the high degree of muffling, the content of the finess is adjusted in several stages so that feeding process is not forced.

The barns are kept beautifully clean as part of what to provide with stree- free envinronment.

The farmers keep an close eyes on cattle to ensure the health of each in individual.

This helps to ensure safety and quality.

Precaution is always taken to ensure hygien management among the processers themselves.

All Japanese cattles are tagged with individual identification numbers which ensures strains ability througout the distributing process.

This system guarantees that the meat has been tested for BSC and provides consumers with information on the breeders and producers.

This carefuly marble beef is a true delicacy.

as it states “Ot in atu.”

Probable interview questions:

1. Tell me why Japanese beef is so tasty tender and creamy.

2. Do you know why it is among the best of the world?

3. What are the specific figures of Japanese agricultural products?

An opening of a speech

I have a few things to say and you might just think they’re important.

It’s been a very strange day.

I don’t think I put it too strong or I even say it’s been an extraordinary day.

I’ve been out there thinking about the day, the way it’s gone.

And it seems to me that now I need to make a few personal statements for a variety of reasons.

“Guess who’s coming to dinner.”

I have only one thing to write down and you may find it important.

Today must be a very strange day as I feel it that way as I‘ve recalled myself the day I said I loved you.

I don’t think I know how to put it appropriately but I know how I feel.

I absolutely know how I have felt of you and I seem to know how you have felt of me.

Have you ever asked yourself which way you let your heart go and when we have to stop and think?

And It seems to me that now I have to make the final decision.

THE DICTIONARY FOR MY SON- Quyển tự điển cho con tôi

Thức giấc không cảm thấy mệt mỏi cũng chẳng rỏ mấy giờ, tôi chui ra khỏi mùng bất công tắc đèn.

Getting up without feeling of tiredness, having no idea what time it was, I got out of the net, switching on.

Tối om. Đã cúp điện một lần nữa.

Nothing was seen. There was a back out again.

I had to find in the dark the only oil lamp used in almost 5 evenings a weeks.

Having lighted the lamp, I realized it just was 3 o'clock.

On the multifuntional table, there was a series of pots of gold fish, a small bottle of medicine I used to take, a vase of flowers being used in such some special days in a year, my children's books and my assignment of my in-service-training course when I was at school for a period of 3 month-time a year.

Tôi tự hỏi, “Ta nên làm gì đây?”

I wondered, " What should I do?".

While many things rushed into my mind, I heard my eldest son laughing.

Nó chắc vừa có một giấc mơ đẹp vì nó vừa đạt giải nhất Anh Văn Thị xã.

He must have got a nice dream since he got the best pupil award on English subject in town.

There came an immediate discussion coming from a lot of parents whose children were my son's classmates.

Vài người chúc mừng tôi vì thành tích ấy.

Some congratulated me on his award.

Kẻ khác quay sang phê phán những đứa con yêu với điểm áp chót.

Other turned to criticize their beloved sons having nearly the lowest scores.

Wondering how to find a tutor of English for hers, my supervisor asked me how I could my son good at English.

Đặc biệt sau khi bà ta nghe rằng con tôi còn giỏi bất kỳ môn học nào.

Especially after having been told that mine was also good at any subjects.

However, some spoke critically of my son,

“Đâu có chi phải giỏi Anh Văn. Con tôi xuất sắc môn Nga Văn.”

"It doesn't matter to be good at such English. Mine is excellent at Russian."

In my neighborhood, there were a lot of fishermen who got medium-sized fishing boats.

Such working class family like mine was rare here.

Đa số con trai trong xóm đang làm ngư phủ cho gia đình chúng trong lúc tụi con gái vá lưới hay làm công việc phơi cá.

Almost boys of my neighbors were working for their family fishing businesses while girls at home mended fishing nets or became workers in frying-fish industry.

Vài đứa may mắn chỉ có thể học xong cấp hai rồi thì phải bỏ học đi làm. Some lucky children to be educated just were able to reach the level of secondary high school then had to drop school to work sooner or later.

Khó tìm thấy đứa con trai nào hạng trung bình trong tòan khu vực này.

It was difficult to find in the whole area any boy having an average grade.

Actually, Thanh, my brother-in-law, enthusiastically tutored Long and two of his classmates but that lasted too soon due to either his late coming home from work or their schedule conflict.

Besides, He, a studious student from Bao Loc Agricultural highschool, often reminded my kids of going to college to gain the mass universal knowledge.

Being orphans early in life, my two sons used to be with the difficulties with their working mother , a member of the Provincial Trade Uninon and having some part-time jobs to support a family of 4.

There was a period of time in which people produced wine from rice illegally to help make ends meet.

I became one of their ferment producers in exchange of the cooked-fermented rice to raise pigs.

I also worked as a mutual fund-raising organizer which helped me earn up to twice as much as the salary I got paid.

I also had to mend fishing net during summer vacation when my sons could give me their hands.

This year, due to my studying at in-service training college and doing my office complicated work, I had no time to work part-time at all.

So the financial burden became heavier.

Some wondered why I had studied in such a difficult time when they couldn't bend their mind to their physical or mental lives and what kept me going on.

What I was doing came from the love for my sons, for their future including mine.

Sometimes, What I did seemed to be either unbelievable or explainable.

I just wanted to be a good example for my 2 sons.

Tôi muốn cho ngừơi ta thấy cái khả năng nuôi dạy và giáo dục chúng.

I wanted to show people my abilities to raise and educate them.

Giá cả lên cao như hai con tôi lớn lên vậy.

Prices went up so did my two sons.

Their clothes no longer fit them neither their shoes.

There came a solution into my mind.

Quần áo của Long nay dành cho em nó.

Clothes which belonged to Long, the eldest, now would be for his brother’s.

Thế còn cái gì cho Long?

So how about Long's?

Tôi có em gái tôi sửa lại quần áo của tôi cho nó.

I had my sister repair mine for his ones.

Long hồn nhiên vui vẻ nhận lấy nó như thể ai đó có đồ mới.

Long gladly innocently recieved it as someone got new clothes.

“Long vâng lời ngoan và cầu thị đáng làm đứa dể thương nhất trong lớp.” một trong những giáo viên của Long đã tuyên bố như thế.

"Long is submissive, obedient and compliant to be the nicest boy in my class." declared one of his teachers.

"He's slow, a bit calm, taciturn but confident, thoughtful and endurable." the teacher added believing his consideration firmly.

"There is some truth to the notion that learning becomes easier as we have more in-life-difficulties rather stimulating ourselves than slowing ".

I asserted my firm belief so not only my son but I myself did something unbelievable.

Generally speaking, he was like his passed-away father as many considered.

Tôi mong nó có thể làm thợ điện như ba nó nên tôi cố giữ vài cuốn sách điện và một máy đo điện.

I hoped he could be an electrician like his father so I tried to keep some electrical books and an electrical measuring device.

I learned French so I could not help him anything with his learning English.

After some evenings being consulted, he became so studious that he came to his teacher's home to take lessons and ask him for help without being shy.

As a matter of fact, Long was selected to be in an English specialized class.

And he was expected to get the best grade to dedicate to the memory of his father, me and his teacher of English.

Chiều hôm qua, khi tôi đi làm về, Long đã đón tôi với niềm phấn kích và hạnh phúc to lớn.

This yesterday evening as I came home from work, Long greeted me with great exciment and happiness,

“Mẹ, Con vừa đậu… hạng nhất.”

"Mom, I've got the first... grade."

He was so moved that he sounded like a stammerer with tears coming out from his innocent eyes.

Upon hearing that, I was really in a stir and a jumble, half saving for my husband having a good time in the past years, the other half for asking myself what to do to help him study better.

"Wow, my dear son, I'll have to give you an award." I rubbed his head promising him.

Long kept the handle bars of my bike that he had ever done before as soon as I left it as if he wanted to make himself easier.

Following him in, I found myself tearful while seeing the back of his shirt mended with a different piece of cloth and the shirt was too small for him and so were his shorts resembling an under wear.

Propping the bike against the wooden wall, I picked up the working bag and took our dinner boxes out.

We started having dinner this way 2 months ago to save.

Căn tin cơ quan chúng tôi nấu ăn tối cho nhân viên với sự hổ trợ của cái nhà hàng nhỏ.

Our office cantin serverd the workers' dinner with its small restaurant funding.

Of course, it must have been cheaper than my Mom's home cooking and it made her free from the work.

While having dinner, seeing my red eyes, Long tended to say something to me but he was too embarrassed to do so.

“Ah, mẹ về rồi.” tiếng kêu của Khanh đã giúp nó cắt đứt sự rối rắm đó.

"Ah, Mom's home." Khanh's calling helped cut the embarrassment.

He proudly announced that his brother good result would be broadcast on the radio.

Nó lý luận, “Sang năm con sẽ đăng ký học lớp Anh Văn và sẽ giống như anh hai.”

He reasoned, “Next year, I will enroll an English class and I will be the same.

“Nam sinh giỏi tiếng Anh nhất thị xã.” nó nói thêm một cách vui vẻ.

“The best English learning schoolboy in town." added he funnily.

They both made me happy. My Mom could no longer keep quiet,

"The best fishing boy in town, in fact."

Cả nhà hạnh phúc vui cười hơn bao giờ trước đấy.

The whole family was happy smiling as it had never been before.

Long told me how he did his test and how pleasant his teacher felt.

Sometimes, Khanh interupted him adding,

Tuyệt làm sao đâu! Độc nhất vô nhị, Có vậy chứ.

"How wonderful! Second to none- That’s it..."

Trước đây tôi chưa hề thấy mẹ tôi vui như thế.

I had never seen my Mom so happy that day.

Tôi đã cảm thấy no như thể niềm vui vừa khiến tôi đầy bụng.

I felt myself full up as if the exciment had made me feel that way.

In my mind, there came a gift for him, an educational one.

Long hỏi tôi nhỏ nhẹ.

" Mom, My teacher requires me to get a good dictionary to look the new words up. Will you get me one, a small one?"asked Long softly.

"Can I use it too, Mom." added Khanh noisily.

I nodded my head promising not very firmly. I said,

"You both study well. I think you deserve something better like a cassette player to listen to English."

Khanh thấy khoái qúa la to lên, “Ê, cho bà ngọai nghe nhạc của ngoại nữa.”

Khanh felt too excited to cry out,

"Yeah, for grand ma to listen to her music too."

While Khanh was clapping his hands happily, Long didn't seem to be satisfied.

Nhìn nó, tôi tình cờ nhớ lại có lần trước đấy hứa mua nó một quyển tự điển.

Looking at him, I happened to remember once I had promised him a dictionary.

Tôi giật mình nhận ra rằng quyển tự điển Anh Việt tốt hổng chừng chiếm mất nửa tháng lương của tôi

I startlingly realized that a good VietNamese- English dictionary would take half of my salary.

How would I be able to afford to get one as an award for Long and his brother’s later usage?

Bất cứ khi nào có từ hay cụm từ khó, Long đã phải đi đến nhà thầy nó để mượn của thầy.

Whenever having new difficult words or phrases, Long had to go to his teacher’s to borrow his.

Once, as he was prepared for his test, Long borrowed one from his close classmates.

He gave its hard cover a gentle touch while turning pages.

That night, he studied so late that my Mom scorned him,

“What on the Earth is the thick book you are reading? Go to bed now or you will fall asleep in class tomorrow? What’s for reading all night?”

I had to comfort him softly and he did.

The next morning, I saw a small blue paper glued on the wall above my bookshelf, “Study hard at my best.”

I though to myself,

“The boys need to learn more and they are deeply in need of a dictionary.”

It was obvious that they both needed one but how could I get it?”

Hàng tháng, tôi đã phải tính tóan từng xu chi xài

Every month, I had to count every cent I spent.

Đôi lúc, Long và em nó đi học về trể đói muốn chết.

Sometimes, Long and his brother came home late from school being so starving to death.

They needed breakfast but they just got a few cents to pay for their bicycle-keeping fee.

I thought back to outline what to do, a piggy bank, a loan, selling something at home, asking for part of my monthly salary in advance, withdrawing my saving account remaining a little or borrowing a sum from someone.

Thinking about it for a long time, I felt so tired that I leaned against the back of the chair.

Looking up naturally, I caught the light of my husband’s eyes from the photo of his on the alter.

He had and accident and passed away when Long was 2 years old and Khanh was just a few months old.

Long giống anh.

“After 12 years of bringing up our children, was there anything I did that made you sad, dear? Long is like you. He is good at English. He will be talented, don’t you think so, dear? Their education is our happiness. I promise to take a very good care of them.” silently I spoke to him.

Ngày mai tôi sẽ viết thư cho bà nội của Long Khanh ở Bến Tre để kể cho bà nghe tin vui này.

Tomorrow I would send Long, Khanh’s grand ma a letter in Ben Tre telling her the good news.

Bà đã ngoài 70 có vài đứa cháu. Trong số đó Long là giỏi nhất.

She was over 70 having some grand sons among those, Long would be the best.

Ngắm nhìn Long ngủ ngon, tôi nhận thấy nó cười một cách hạnh phúc.

Watching Long sleeping safe and sound, I found him smiling happily.

Perhaps, he was happy with his classmates’ congratulations on his success or their friendly insuling jokes.

Khi tôi ở tuổi nó, không có gì đã làm tôi vui trừ một món quà nhỏ ngay sau khi tôi thi đậu tú tài.

When I was his age, nothing made me happy except a small gift given by my Mom right after I graduated from high school.

Suddenly, I remembered my wedding ring. It was just a stuff, a sign.

Nó giúp cho chúng tôi ư? Việc tôi đeo nó giúp gì cho việc học của Long?

Would it help us? Would my wearing it help Long’s studying?

I could be sure its value would help me with what I needed now and I could also be sure to go back home the following day with a good nice dictionary and on its first page, I would write neatly:

“To my beloved sons.”

HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE US- COST

FOOTBALL AND MY LIFE

A lot has been both said and written about football so I want to quote briefly how it has changed my life so deeply.

As a hopeless student with a bad background and a broken family, I chose to play football to prove myself. As a striker, I led my team, 74 KNNc, to the final match. We defeated our opponent, 74KCNa, to become champions of the university and I obviously became a talented trustful midfielder in school. Considering a goal keeper in class 74 CTM not qualified enough, I volunteered to wear gloves and keep the goal from the first game in December, 1975 until the day I came to Kien Giang in March, 1980. To keep my position, I just had to practice hard. In Bao Loc, to get up early, I had to go to bed at 9. There, in order to get a good sleep, I practiced every afternoon. Because I was a book-worm and played the guitar 365 days a year in Bao Loc, here I could do again what I did. Rain or sunshine could not stop me playing the guitar, neither did it rain “cats and dogs” or was it so hot.

When the former team captain, Nguyen Hung, Agricultural College, graduated in July 1976, I was voted to replace him. When I first showed up in the tournament “The Spring” run by the Department of Education of HCMC, I was among the 3 goalkeepers selected. During my 4 years of college, I neither missed nor played badly in any games. During the first month of 1977, Phan Van Lan, a graduate from Tu Son Gym and Sports University, set up university policy which included maintaining that each sport’s department head was solely responsible and independent. I was the first he chose to be the chief team and head of football. The more whole school sports was progressive, the better I was trustful and responsible. I knew my special strenght best of all and I recoginezd very clearly I what I would do. That helped me a lot as a farmer would know his daily work or a soldier understood his each fight. Even though I was not a Communist youth- member, I was in charge as the head of football of the school and, of course, Agriculture ward. Although I was not trained, I took a whisle and was a good referee of all school games. Basketball followed Foolball’s success. With my playing experience in Bao Loc, I had a chance to play in male school basket ball team. Due to a lot of girl students in the dorm wanted to try, I became their coach- an ideal one in some of their eyes.

Other teams around the school didn’t have or lacked a yard to practice. We turned to be a big magnet. We got a lot of invitations. Viso Company often asked my 2 team mates and me to officially play for them. Then Viet Duc Technical High school and Thu Duc district team also need my sticky hands. In my internship in Soc Trang, the chief of the provincial team persuaded me to join their games. Back in Bao Loc, Tam De and Bay Binh’s talent helped make me the second striker, I was rather coward though. After the national revolution, I was a guy with self-pity. But with what I did for the school sports campaign, I was self- assured. It was often said, “Being expert or being political”. I often asked myself, “Being good enough”. On behalf of the whole team, I was in charge of keep the bikes and motobikes for some big games. I got a job of making lines and hanging the goal’s nets to raise the team’s fund. For each of the city’s big games, I was given 2 tickets to Thong Nhat stadium. When my class went practicing at four different locations, beside my guitar, I carried a big bag of football shoes for my team class. In another word, when getting invitations to play where we practiced, we advertised our university’s brand name. Due to what I did, Can Tho University officially asked me to work for it Sep 1979.

Contrary to many predictions, I was offered a job as a sports official at my own University. I was unexpectedly honored. The school bus, a dorm room, teacher’s dining room, high standard such as 19 kg of rice, meat, milk, sportswear were what all graduates wished. My godmother, also my mother-in-law to be, had nothing more to expect from me. After one year of separation, I came back to her family and reconciled myself to a sister’s envy as well as others’. After solving my private matters, I decided to see my biological mother at Soc Xoai, Hon Dat, Kien Giang In my luggage, there was a warm love for my Mom and a burning love for football as well. Wearing school shoes and a T-shirt while I practiced at Soc Xoai’s yard, everyone enjoyed watching me as I did when Phuong Thanh, an artist- footballer, practiced and played one game for my Bao Loc Agriculture high school in 1973. Mr. Tu Da- the team manager- signed a contract to have me play for The provincial Technical Material Company several games. Due to lacking players, the rich and famous team- a consecutive champions- got me here to work and play football for it. Just a few knew that my godmother advised me to be here so I would be able to have a chance to support my Blood Mom.

At the end of March 1980, I got here to work while my brother was still in prison, my sister was in a new-economic zone. Practicing every afternoon, playing every fortnight, I played obviously better. In the national tournament that year 1982, I was a selected goalie. The team was assisted by one of the Sai Gon Port’s midfielers. As a second goal keeper, I played 2 games rather well. After weekly game, I saw my Mom who was proud of me because the neigbors had rumors or talked about me,

“It’s rare to be the same as you.”

After my fiance’s visit and my brother sister’s going abroad, Apr 1982, the company was sure that I had missed the trip so they would no longer trust me. Being disappointed, losing hope made me drink. No long after joining drinking club, I was highly ranked. Asking for a permission to stay out, I tutored and shared a small making chalk business. I practiced to make advertising board by myself to prepare for another change. Having a lover and getting married to her helped me look forward. I stayed with the family-in-law and went to work until I was fired. Failing to apply jobs several times, I decided to be part of my father-in- law’s making wine home business. Did the ball stop rolling in my heart? Was life just as smooth as it seemed? Did I feel pleased to be a wine producer. I did not believe in fate but I did count on what Dat- a former famous striker- working as a coach for Forestry Department- asked me,

“Try to play a game for us, brother Thanh.”

That was a semi-final game in the provincial championship 1985. I played well and we won that game. I was asked to go on for the final one- the fate- deciding one.

Making a good save in the game, I was almost a hero. In the 5-penalty shoot out, our opponent- Ha Tien cement- 2 would never forget my save which helped make the Forestry Department the champions.

How spectacular a football game! How about life?

EARLIER BETTER

So why introduce little ones to math so early?
University of Chicago psychology professor Sian Beilock, an expert on performance anxiety, says
the more fun and familiar math is early on, the less likely children will panic when they encounter math in school.

--------------------- This is my way. ---------------------

So why introduce little ones to English so early?
As a simple teacher of English beginning to learn so late, I think the more fun and familiar English is early on, the less likely children will panic when they encounter English in school.

(Irish Farming Colleges Thrive During Recession)

Dominic Laurie

Ireland is back into recession for a second time since the start of the financial crisis four years ago. Many sectors of the economy are struggling. But one traditional Irish career has suddenly become more attractive again - farming. Agricultural colleges have seen a resurgence in admissions.

Pallaskenry Agricultural College teaches more traditional courses in farming, particularly how to look after dairy herds, such a common sight in this part of Ireland. The open day is popular. There are several bus loads of high school kids coming to look around. But it wasn’t always like this. Only a few years ago, the college almost had to close. In Ireland’s boom years, farming was unpopular and the number of students reached an all-time low.

"Agriculture was a dirty name. There was no positive future in agriculture. Parents were advising their sons and daughters to do anything but agriculture. And what is I suppose extraordinary looking back at it, is how such a change could have occurred in such a short space of time. We’re at a stage now where every parent in Ireland that has a farm, and even people in urban communities are talking about if there is any way they could get into farming.”

John Godley, a student from a nearby high school, is looking around today. He says many of his friends are talking about moving abroad to find work. He, though, wants to stay.

"You can just go on your family farm, and you don’t have to go away to Australia looking for work - it’s handy!" he said.

Pallaskenry is not alone in its popularity. The number of students at all the country’s agricultural colleges has doubled since 2006. But it’s not just a lack of other options that’s making farming more attractive.

Global prices for beef, lamb and milk are all up. Ireland exports all of these. So even while Ireland's domestic economy struggles, many farmers are doing well.

John’s teacher, Paddy Mulvihill, says a career in farming is now far more attractive than a few years ago.

“There is work in farming. Those doing engineering or accounting or that area, there’s very little prospect of work - they’ll go on to college all right, but there’s no prospect of future employment, they’re taking a chance on it. Farming is more certain at the moment, and profits have definitely increased.”

Farming can’t save everyone. Many young people have moved abroad to find a better future.

But just as Ireland’s lambing season provides fresh hope for farmers, those studying agriculture can look to a brighter future too.

That’s if they can get a place in college.

LEARNING ENGLISH IS A BUSINESS

After studying English as a foreign language for more than 10 years in her native Spain, attending summer courses in neighboring England and visiting New York, Washington, D.C. and other U.S. cities on vacation, Lorena Arroyo affirms she still hasn't mastered the language.

Arroyo, 28, said she has done everything to improve her understanding and lose her accent, including paying friends $20 per hour to speak English with her.

The irony is that Arroyo works for an English media organization.

She was hired more than two years ago as a web producer and moved to Miami to report on world news for the English media organization's Spanish-speaking readers.

However, not being fluent in English has limited her job opportunities.

“They’re offering correspondent positions and they want candidates to be fluent in Spanish and English. I didn’t apply for them, even if I would have like to, because I’m not bilingual,” she admitted.

How to Speak Well and Confidently

How to Speak Well and Confidently

Are you very shy when it comes to new surroundings, such as starting a new class or moving to a new area? Sometimes, it is necessary to overcome your shyness and speak confidently. By doing this, it can help you not only to share your ideas properly to others, but also to learn communicating with others. Here are a few steps to consider when speaking with confidence.

Steps

1. Learn how to have conversations with people. Your ideas or opinions may not always be accepted by others, but this is nothing unusual. Open your mouth, express your beliefs! This will improve your courage.

2. Don’t be afraid and speak loudly. If you speak in a low voice, not only will others not be able to hear what you say, but you will also portray a submissive demeanor, which suggests the opposite of a confident one.

3. Make eye contact when you speak. For one thing, it is polite for others. Also, eye contact will help others to listen to your thinking carefully.

4. Praise yourself everyday! This will promote your own confidence, which is important when you speak. With more confidence, people will take your thinking more seriously.

Tips

• Don’t be nervous when you make mistakes. Human error is far from being a new concept — nobody is perfect! It is normal for everyone to make mistakes. Just calm down and keep speaking bravely.

• Try and try again! This may be difficult for a shy person at first, but you need to force yourself to speak, and not seclude your thoughts. If you have some ideas, then try to speak out! Don’t just keep them in your head.

• If you have self confidence issues, try to think that you are the only one who has sound knowledge about the topic. Then go ahead and impart your knowledge to the audience in an effective way.

• Remember that there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Don’t portray an exaggerated amount of confidence, or you will come off as arrogant, believing that your ideas are better than the ideas of everyone else.
